Part of the annual youth “Expressions” exhibition at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the InSight project is an Artist-In-Residence collaboration with a group of students. For Expressions 47, Brenda Reid collaborated with Eastwood Collegiate Institute and St. Terra of Avila Catholic Elementary School. In total, 61 students participated from grades 8-10.

Brenda Reid worked with the students to create a collection of experimental sketchbooks. By re-examining this fundamental artist’s tool, students were challenged to expand their ideas of what a sketchbook can be and create work with a process-based mindset. The resulting works reveal how the sketchbook can inspire creativity rather than simply record our ideas.

Each student selected different papers, assembled signatures and bound their own books. Some books collect pages made and assembled by several students.
